Annotations in an interleaved copy of Orphica, edited by Eugenius Abel (1885), ca. 1892-1926.

William Romaine Newbold's annotations in an interleaved copy of Orphica, edited by Jenő Ábel (Eugenius Abel). The printed book, in Greek with preface and notes in Latin, contains: Orphei Argonautica; Orphei Hymni; Orphei Lithica; Fragmenta Orphica; and an appendix of various hymns including those by Proclus. The annotations pertain only to the sections Orphei Hymni and Fragmenta Orphica. They include in two places translations of a passages in the Greek text (preceding p. 61; leaf between p. 202 and 203); in the first instance a line of the translation is on a slip of paper tipped onto the page, evidently obscuring an older version. No certain basis could be found for dating the annotations; in the context of the present collection (Ms. Coll. 856), they presumably date from no earlier than the beginning of Newbold's teaching career.
